I hope that this sheds light on how much better this project could be. Building it with no connections is an improvement, but not really forward thinking.
I also have read there is a bridge on the approach to the tunnels that is only 2-tracked. For this to be run optimally, that bridge needs to be expanded(another $3bln).
There were some flaws in the design. For example it would not have been usable by Amtrak. But it would have taken some trains off the NEC main when ultimately completed. Projects like this are such long term it is like planning for grandchildren on your first date. Considering the depressed economy it might have been possible to rebid some contracts at lower cost.
It's a scam by Christie so he looks like a "real conservative" to the Tea Party wackos, who actually think he is presidential material. It is grandstanding and nothing more.

No , thats a needed project. Shows what you know about Rail projects in this region...... The ESA project is UC , and will open in a few years......,so is the second avenue subway and wasteful project?
Its a stunt to get more $ from the Feds. No way this project gets canceled. There is way too much at stake. Any I'm sorry NJ, but you already have some of the lowest taxes in the country, and your gas tax is microscopic, people need to spend a little more now (well not really now, as the costs wont be felt for few years) to get our transportation system into the 21st century. We are behind the times because people are unable to see the big picture when it comes to infrastructure development. The attitude is "If it doesn't directly affect my life, than I'm against it" Totally short-sighted and naive.
Can you explain what you meant by that statement? NJ has the highest property taxes in the nation. Did you mean income tax? Sales tax? . You are right about the gas tax.
Evidently, it's not enough that Port Authority, nominally an interstate agency, does whatever New Jersey wants it to. PA is the reason for that silly Air Train in Queens--the first proposal came from New York and involved a subway line running from Kennedy to LaGuardia, connecting with all the existing lines in the borough. That would have been useful, and would have drawn a huge ridership. But no...Port Authority squashed that in favor of the Air Train, which it controls and keeps all revenue derived.
They went even further: New York kicked in money for that monorail line to Newark Airport. And it doesn't even run to our state!
So if the ARC tunnel has to be built, let it be built by New Jersey. If they don't think they can manage it, fine. The rest of us will live without it.
The bolded is a pretty funny statement, because NJ is always screaming that the PA just does everything for New York. This especially happens every time a new gov comes in to each state. It's a constant tug-of-war between governors over who is getting their fair share from the PA. You know, the kind of tug-of-war that caused the creation of the PA in the first place.
