This is a trip I make fairly regularly, and the 8 dollar George Washington Bridge (or Holland Tunnel, etc.) toll really starts to add up. Is there any way around this? It seems like it's unavoidable any way you try to cross into New York.

Edit: The thread title should say New JERSEY, not New York (d'oh!). It appears impossible to edit thread titles though...A moderator can do it -- Title fixed.

Depends where in NJ you are and where in CT are you going? There is the Tappan Zee Bridge and of course the Newburgh-Beacon I-84 to Danbury-Hartford-Waterbury for $1 ONE WAY.

The cheapest way to enter New York City from Upstate New York is Tappan Zee Bridge (TOLL $5)

So you save $3 more - that's the best way if you are comming from CT

From NJ - You cannot avoid the $8 toll, unless you drive up to New York state and take Tappan Zee bridge, but since there are tolls anyway, and the extra gas money driving up there, it is not worth it.

Wrong. The cheapest bridges are Bear Mountain, Mid-Hudson and Newburgh-Beacon $1 one way on the eastbound side.

Yes, and the OP can take the Palisades Parkway all the way to Bear Mountain, so it would only be a $1 toll. The problem is that once across Bear Mountain, it's a trek to get to 84 to CT. And, if you need Fairfield County, you would have to cross Westchester from Yorktown on Route 35 to get to Ridgefield. It can be done, but it is significantly longer a trip than taking the Tappan Zee.

Using the Tappan Zee, you can avoid tolls by taking the Palisades to Exit 9E, cross the Tappan Zee into Westchester, and then get to Southern CT or 684 to 84 for destinations to the north, if you want to avoid I-95. You can also get on the Merritt/Hutch via that route as well.

For the Newburgh crossing, again, take the Palisades, but take the exit for Route 6 west. Follow Route 6 to 84 east, and then 84 into CT. It would be much faster than traversing Westchester, as there are two-lane roads on the other side of the Bear Mountain Bridge for the majority of the route.

But if you went as far as Bear Mountain, how much more would you be spending on gasoline--and would that make using the George Washington Bridge the better option, after all? (It's hard to judge, because the OP didn't say what part of NJ this trip was originating from).

Yes, the Tappan Zee is cheaper. Of course, it's also a bridge that reached the end of its useful life some time ago and badly needs to be replaced and is on the short list of New York's most unsafe bridges. Just say a quick prayer and hold your breath as you drive over it.

Yep, it all depends where in NJ to where in CT so I dunno what option is the best.

Heck! if you're that cheap you might as well go all the way up to Albany(hudson river crossings are free up there) then take the Taconic SP to I-84. How does that saying go, "a penny wise, a dollar foolish?"

BTW you forgot the Kingston-Rhinebeck bridge.
