Hi!

I'm a Alabama born, Atlanta raised, now I wanna be a New York reside.

A little more about myself....

Black
Female
I'm 23 years old
No kids
My budget is 500-1,000 (Not alot)

I have a few questions?

How will I fit in as a young southerner in NYC?
How would I find a job out there?
Where to make friends in NY?
How do I find a good roommate?
What Borough should I move to?
What to do, and What not do in NY?
How to get around in NYC?

I would love to hear stories from other southerners that move to NY as well.
Thanks!

How to find a job- what do you do? If you have a specific career/profession you can apply online using a NYC address if possible, then fly in for interviews. If not, come up for a few weeks and go to every place possible that's hiring, then hope something sticks.

How to get around- public transportation, you do not need a car

You should have a lot of money saved up- flights for interviews, money for a moving company or truck rental, 1st month of rent, security deposit, possible last month of rent. At least $5,000 if you will have a job before you come. At least $15,000 if you will not.

Cost of living is very high, so I hope you will have a good paying job. Finding roommates will be difficult from Atlanta.

I found a job while working in Altlanta, but used a NY address on my resume and applications. It would be much better if you had someone already living up here so you can room with them or even use their address for a possible interview. I'm rooming with someone now all my furniture is on storage until I move out on my own and still will not need half the things I had in GA. $1000 budget is not enough for living in NYC, you definitely need a roommate...Good luck!

Do you want to pay 500-1000 for rent or only have that much saved up to move to NYC? Either way, it is not much to work with. You will have to have a roommate which is probably a good idea since you would be new. I lived in Queens in a 3 bedroom house for about $650/month with my roommates paying $550/month since I had the master bedroom.

I would say at $850 and up you could probably find a walk-up to share in Manhattan but your money might be better spent in an outer borough with such a tight budget. I would say Harlem or Brooklyn is a good place to aim for. Queens is far and suburban and the Bronx is not worth leaving ATL.

My long time friend's mother is born and raised in Pensacola, FL and she moved to Harlem during internships in law school and now commutes from Philly to NYC for work. She really liked the Harlem vibe. Its soulful and you would probably fit in better than Brooklyn which has West Indians although everyone is very welcoming.

I know a lot of Southerners here but it's not like they have a spot they all go to. Visit one of the roommate sites or craigslist and just be very detailed and try to have chats on the phone with potential roommates. Your biggest concern is finding a job. Find one BEFORE you come because 500-1000 will last you like 2 weeks here.

What experience do you have? Have you ever considered trying NYC out as a live-in volunteer with Americorps or perhaps a hostel worker? The whole job thing and the other questions really depend on where you end up and what you do.

In general, you get around on the extensive train system. Don't bother with Manhattan buses but the other borough buses are fine. Once again, what to do and not to do depends on where you will end up. You will get alot of advice on where not to go in Brooklyn vs. Manhattan.

500-1000 that is gonna fly without a roommate. If you plan on having a career with a degree than come up. But if not stay in ATL. You will find a lot of diversity and culture here unlike the south. (sorry about the stereotype it just one of my guilty things

you'll be in the ghetto, for 1. You're just considering rent alone. utilities will not be included with your rent. You also have to think about FOOD, CELLPHONES, CABLE TV.. Stay in ATL, gather double what you've saved, then come with more of a budget. You'll regret it if you don't. Don't make me say I told you so.

Definitely do what your heart desires. Dont rush but dont let any of these people deter you from fulfilling your dream. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta (or simply wanna) do and yes you may struggle and yes you may sacrifice, but if you set some long and short term goals, do some research on temporary housing (you can rent a room for as little as 100/week), get together your resume and send it everywhere something will stick.

I dont see why there must be a pre-requisite for obtaining your bachelors degree before moving. The time to do spontaneous things is now while your young, like me. In the time it takes to get your degree you might fall in love, get married, have a kid, get offered a position you can't refuse then be unable to do that crazy old move to NYC like you always wanted. I'm 24 and I am going to make a long distance move. Granted I will have saved up $10,000 but you could do it on less. Let me know how it goes!

Hmm a lot of people moved from NYC to Atlanta because they say the lifestyle including housing cost of living are so good. I say save more money as the others suggested and rethink all of the reasons you want to move into the struggle called NY.

How will I fit in as a young southerner in NYC?
You'll be fine. There are a lot of southern expats up there actually. I moved from Atlanta a couple years ago and stayed about a year and I'm kicking myself for moving back down here. People aren't gonna make fun of how you talk or anything like that. I actually had people compliment me on my accent(it's relatively slight).
How would I find a job out there? Pretty much like you would in Atlanta. Pound the pavement. Retail may be good for you to get on your feet, especially if you have experience. There are plenty of places to apply and don't rule anything out.
Where to make friends in NY? There are tons of free events and museums and galleries have free nights as well. It comes pretty naturally if you are the slightest bit outgoing. People aren't as shutoff from the rest of the world as many people think. They actually tend to be quite friendly. If all else fails try something like meetup.com or even craigslist.
How do I find a good roommate? This is the hard part. It's always iffy moving in with someone you don't know but it is common for a huge percentage of people in NYC. i found a room through craigslist and my landlord/roommate was pretty cool. We sort of did our own thing.
What Borough should I move to? Queens or Brooklynare my first recommendations. The Bronx has some nice areas as well but they tend to be pretty far out. I lived in Astoria which is in Queens and I loved it. If you are a hipster you may be happiest in Williamsburg Brooklyn but i think rent has creeped up since they invaded. There are tons of really cool neighborhoods. The only reason I don't recommend Manhattan is due to expense.
What to do, and What not do in NY? Get out and walk the streets. That was the majority of my entertainment the whole time I was up there. There is so much going on compared to any other place you've lived that I guarantee you'll be downright fascinated by it for a good while after you get there. Also, be open minded and willing to experience everything the city has to offer. It's a great place to immerse yourself in a lot of different cultures.
How to get around in NYC? Subway, bus, tram...It's definitely not MARTA. The system up there actually goes somewhere and is very efficient Chinatown buses go to Boston, Philly, DC and some other cities for $40 and under RT. One even goes to Atlanta but it's $200RT(cheaper to fly).

I would love to hear stories from other southerners that move to NY as well.

Thanks!

Let me know what happens. Good luck.
