I'm new to C-D but have been reading here forever. I guess I never needed to register, but here I am now
Anyway, I moved to NYC last month and am looking for somewhere to live for the next few months. I would prefer to stay in Manhattan because I work in Midtown and most of my friends are in the Hell's Kitchen area. That said.. I can't/don't want to pay tons of money for the next 6 months (my boyfriend is moving here in June and we're looking to sign a year's lease then). With that said, I've been trolling Craigslist and checked out a place in Inwood, on Academy by Nagle (right by the 1). I didn't necessarily feel unsafe, but definitely got some catcalls and got the impression it wasn't a place to be hanging out late at night. The price of the studio was right and it was a secured building. Would it be ok for a 23 year old female (I'm 5'1, blonde, kind of scrawny looking) to live there or should I keep looking?
Go with your gut. I live in Upper Manhattan and am so tired of everyone assuming that the whole area is dangerous, however, I would be wary of the location you are speaking of. It's a good time of year to be looking at apartments, you don't really need to rush in to anything. Can you do a sublet or share until your boyfriend arrives?
Thanks for your input. I ended up not taking the sublet because of my safety concerns, although finding a sublet for the 3rd of November is proving to be difficult! Such is NYC, I guess... I found my current sublet in 3 days, so I am hoping that something comes along quick! (And the price is affordable!)

Good thinking. Those blocks are real hectic. Take it from me, I literally live right across the bridge.
Ended up in FiDi for this month (actually, I have to be out by the 27th) - I really need to be permanently hired so I can sign even a 6month lease and be able to show 40x my rent. Getting a guarantor is not an option. Finding a full time job here is SO difficult!
When you get right down to it, safety is subjective. If you don't feel safe in a particular area, then you certainly shouldn't listen to anyone who tells you how wonderful it is--or vice versa. I personally would never move into a neighborhood just because someone said nice things about it. See how you feel there first!
As regards uptown Manhattan, I'd have to go along with NS4Life. Check out Overlook and Bennett in the 180s and 90s.
