Be careful with any electronics out in public from cellphones to laptops. Muggers and crazy people are looking for anything valuable to sell so cameras will catch their attention.

It's sad how apathetic everyone is to crimes like these; people don't care unless it's happening to them. You're really on your own if anything happens to you.

Transit workers especially don't want to get involved because they think the only thing they have to do is operate the train or bus. Makes me wonder if they're even trained in how to deal with stuff.

Maybe you could start a photo club and go on these excursions as a group? You could meet at the location, or all take the train together (if you would worry about cameras on the train too). It might actually add to the fun and spirit of discovery.

When I had my old 35mm (before the digital age), that's what I used to do. I would put it in a double Key Food plastic bag with a sweater over it and no one would think I had anything valuable.

I see photogs in Central Park all the time with expensive cameras, tripods, etc walking around & taking pics. I doubt anything would happen in Central Park in the middle of a nice day with 100s of people around, but you never know.

Not only do many NYCers not care, because theres too many people there and people hold the value of a shrub in the eyes of many of these people. But they are also highly distracted and completely unaware of their surroundings as well.

Ipods, cellphones, etc keep people completely oblivious to what is happening around them.

A few weeks ago I collapsed and lost consciousness for almost 10 seconds in the middle of a NYC gym after pulling a bicep being overwhelmed by the pain. Nobody there even noticed, they were completely unaware.

I'm not surprised nobody came by to help you at all. I'm actually surprised the people ahead of you turned around to look.
