Hi. I noticed tonight that in my new building, several of the neighbors are leaving candles burning outside their apartments. I assume it's the start of a holiday, but it freaks me out that the candles are left in the hallways untended. Does anyone know what the holiday might be? I'm thinking Diwali. Should I ask my neighbors to take them in at bedtime or blow them out? Should I tell the landlord? Untended candles are just so dangerous. On the other hand, I'm new and I don't want my neighbors pissed at me.

Are these neighbors Hindu? Diwali starts on Friday and typically involves a lot of lights and fireworks, etc.

Call the fire dept and the LL will get a violation.
This is fire hazzard, I would certainly not play around with it.
Holiday or whatever it is it is not acceptable to leave a burning candle in a hallway....whats wrong with these stupid people??????????

I went over and asked and yes, it's for Diwali. They nicely blew out the candle and took it inside. I feel bad in that I don't want to interfere with anyone's religious tradition but I also don't want to die in an apartment house fire if it can be avoided. I'm not so worried for me, even, but I have pets who are trapped if something happens when I'm not home.

I'm the new kid on the block and I was trying to keep a low, unobtrusive profile. Oh well.

There is no gray area with the FDNY. Don't call the local engine company. They will not respond unless you call 911.

New York fire laws outweigh religion. Talk to the landlord or call the fire department for advice.

You did the right thing. It's one thing to follow one's religious traditions but quite another when you're creating a fire hazard.
You still have to worry about their unattended candles inside their apartments though

Glad they were reasonable people and did not *****. You could always just blow the candles out too

At least they had some respect. Looks like it might work out without any problems.
