My husband just got a job in midtown and we plan to find a rental in Manhattan. We have two young children, and aside from the commute time we of course would like a neighborhood that is family friendly. What I mean by that is, are there many children living there, is it "safe", clean, attractive. Would like to be able to find a 2 or 3 bedroom rental for under 5K. What would you recommend?

Upper West Side is good, so is Tribeca. But wildly expensive.

For a more affordable alternative try Hudson Heights, which is north of 181st st and south of the Cloisters, between Broadway and the Hudson River. Its just north of the George Washington Bridge and maybe a 30 min ride on the A train to Midtown. Many young families now find this the only affordable middle-class part of Manhattan left that is also safe, clean, attractive, and with good schools (PS/MS 187). Used to be that this was just part of Washington Heights to most people ( and technically it still is) but a few years back the real estate folks started calling it Hudson Heights to differentiate it from the poorer Domincan sections south of 181st st and east of Broadway.

If you need public schools, Upper East Side (PS6) and Tribeca offer some of the best in Manhattan. If you are looking private, most elite schools are on the Upper East Side and Upper West Side.

I lived on the UES for many years- across the street from a park. I can vouch for the amount of kiddos, strollers, mommies, nannies, etc in the neighborhood! There were probably 5 kids stores (clothing, toys, kids haircuts, etc) within two block of my East 70's apartment.

A lot of the good neighborhoods in Manhattan are expensive. The most affordable would be TriBeCa or Chelsea.

Tribeca or maybe the Upper West Side. They are insanely expensive though. The Upper East Side as well.
