Also, I would not be willing to live in some ghetto area where I'm fearing for my safety.
You can probably find a large 1 br with a den or office room( a JR4,maybe 900 sq ft) in some decent areas of The Bronx but I think that's as good as it's going to get on $1,000/mo
You can get a 1 bedroom if you're willing to live far away from the city in Queens - think Glendale, Woodhaven, Richmond Hill, but there will be nothing to do, your commute is going to be a big hassle, and the apartment isn't going to be great.
If you're willing to live in a studio it'll be a little easier to find something closer to the city, but again it won't be great. In your situation, I'd look for a studio in a private home in Astoria, Woodside or Sunnyside. It will likely be bigger, less disturbance from neighbors, less risk for break ins and you might be able to get a steady rental price without yearly increases.
$1400 is a more realistic starting price for something decent in Queens.
You can find decent-sized and totally safe places in the Bronx for $1K, easy. The real question is what kind of public transit access do you need? Do you need to get to Manhattan regularly and/or quickly? I know of 1brs. in Woodlawn and Riverdale that are around 500 square feet for about $1K, maybe a little less. The neighborhoods are quite safe but aren't particularly close to Manhattan (at least the parts you'd want to get to).
Even in Bensonhurst for a 2BR that is stretch but fine for a 1BR, most likely in a 2-4 family (but those seem to be the better deals). I pay $1000 for a nice prewar 1BR just over in Gravesend. I
