Just a quick post. Moving to New York in August, was offered an apt in Woodhaven, but I don't know the area. I'm a single white mother with a young son. Any input? Crime...schools...etc?

depnding on exact location the area can be ok, crime is close by but easily avoided, travel to the city is not the easiest so it may not be good for access to manhattan, schools are typical city schools, probably ok in the early grades and they worsen as the kid progresses

Commute to Manhattan is very slow.. you'll have to take the J or Z (el rail) which is notorious for 15-30 minute gaps, pitifully slow trains, and ass-dirty cars. If you have a kid, you can take him/her to the very pretty Forest Park, or just for a walk around the very nice cobbled sidewalks and rolling hills. Woodhaven is served by Public School District 29, which has some nice elementary and Middle Schools around. For High School, you ought to have your child go to Manhattan.
