What are some of the decent, safe towns/areas with the cheapest housing around NYC (NJ, Upstate, Connecticut)? Looking for suburbs within a 1hr commute, not looking to live inside NYC.

Thanks.

In NJ I'd recommend Secaucus, East Rutherford, and Lyndhurst...all suburban and 1BR rents average $1100+ depending what you're after. All these towns have great transportation to midtown as well. BTW you may want to define "cheapest housing". Good luck!

I was thinking about areas with overall cheaper real estate prices, but good point, I will need a regular 1 br apartment.

Brooklyn is still in the city, but it's much cheaper. There are apartments really close to the subway and only one stop from Manhattan.
I guess I could also recommend Fort Lee, but it really cramps your style when you have to try to catch a bus home from Port Authority late at night and those buses are so noisy.

I am not looking for the city though, it is too crowded and too much traffic, I would like to stay close enough to NYC to go there once in a while, but not stay there all the time

How about other places, besides NJ, like upstate NY, close to Connecticut?
