Check out Toshi Apartments: It was my first time in NEW YORK and I was a little apprehensive, though I need not have been, I loved every minute!
Our hotel was a little way out towards the end of Central Park, but a short ride by cab brought us to and from Times Square. Don't hesitate to take a cab, here it is much cheaper than in the UK and everybody does it. To get out bearings we bought a 48hour ticket on the Hop-on/Hop-off Tour bus, a steep $54 p.p., but well worth it. There are 3 different loops and we did some of them twice. The Night Loop was really great, even more so as our guide was a Woody Allan Double, including the zany jokes! As the Guides are different each time you take the bus, so is the information they give you, and we enjoyed it all thoroughly. We also used this bus to take us to specific areas we wanted to explore, hopping off and on again to bring us back to Times Square.
Interested in History? The Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side is well worth a visit!
New York is much more compact than I had imagined it to be and very easy to navigate on foot. The People are friendly and the atmosphere is great. And you don't need to spend a fortune on food, if you eat in a Diner the food is good American and the coffee unlimited. A word of advice on getting money from an ATM machine: Use the Chase Manhattan Bank, they don't charge! And when you leave for home, take a cab to the airport. All cabs charge a flat $45 from Manhattan and it is quite a trek, so leave early. Personally, I can't wait to go back.
