It doesn't sound like you have much of a plan. What kind of work would you do and how much do you think you'll make? Minimum wage is not going to cut it unles you have several roommates. How much money do you have saved so far? You should have a minimum of 6 months, preferably 12, of living expenses before you leave. NYC is extremely expensive and the UI rate is still very high.

2,000 for a two bedroom is expensive? Huh? Sounds very cheap!

armysc, you still haven't tended to the fact that it's going to be difficult to find an apartment that's willing to rent to you for just a few months. Getting an apartment in NY is tough, period, even for people who are willing to sign one- or two-year leases. You can't just waltz in and pay rent and get an apartment like you probably can in SC.

well my plan is to get a job and work hard until the time came to move. My savings would be somewhere over 2000 dollars, then find some people who already have an apartment who were looking for a roommate(s).

Id like to get a job in a restaurant. Thats where my last two jobs have been. I can do anything in a restaurant, I could run one. My last job, when I was a senior in highschool, I worked ten hours a day, yes, on top of school. I brought 60-70 dollars a day.

Like I said I live in a studio. My parents pay for it as they make more than x80s my rent.

Keep in mind you need to pay 1st month, last month plus security (usually one month's rent) in order to move in.

$2000 will probably last you one day.

The NYTimes recently ran an article on how 20somethings squeeze into tiny apartments. You should read it in preparation. I moved to NYC with less than you plan on having. It can be done, but it takes a lot of work.

Are you attractive? That will help getting a restaurant job.

You'll need at least $10k before you can think about moving here.

You still haven't answered my question: how are you going to find a temporary (three months or so) lease on an apartment?

...And you think you can run an NYC restaurant? Getting a job in a fine dining restaurant in NYC is incredibly competitive.

how does someone decide to move to New York and then fall off the clouds at the last minute realizing that it's an expensive place to live in?!
