Why does Bloomberg want to extend a train to NJ when parts of boroughs have terrible service and Staten Island has no subway at all? Focus on the subway in NYC, who cares about NJ.

I agree, I'd rather see new lines or extensions in Queens.

Because NYC benefits immensely from having office workers who live in NJ. They pay our income taxes, but they don't make use of our schools or our welfare net. So a project that encourages people in NJ to commute to NYC provides more money for the city to use on projects for residents.
Also, the project, if it happened, would be financed by federal money and the PANYNJ, not by the city. Since the whole point of the federal grant is a connection between NYC and NJ, they would never give the city the money to extend subway lines in Queens.

Is this the one NJ denied? If so, I read something about the North Staten Island Senate lady pressing Bloomberg to get a train running on Staten Island with the money that would connect to the R in Brooklyn. Apparently in like 1903 or something this was a plan, lol. Supposedly Staten Island was promised subway service when they voted to join the city in the late 1800's, lolol. Oh, a sign of things to come...

I went to Bay Ridge this weekend via the R train. It seemed like forever or at least an hour. Would extending it into SI relieve your commute to the city?
New Jersey , Long Island , Lower Hudson Valley - note the ARC cancellation means that all new lines will go to Hoboken. Its 3 pages and to go back a fourth due to an error you have to go to page 1.

extending to the R makes no sense. much more feasible to extend 1 train service to St. George with a transfer to SIR and re-open the North Shore line. The ferry is a waste of time/money.

That makes more sense. The ferry is great for tourist. That's about it. It's a long slow trip.

From the looks if it THe R train was supposed to ride over the Verrezano bridge, but Robert Moses was never a big fan of the Subway and that idea was scrapped. It would cost too much money for the city and state to buy a TBM or tunnel boring machine to carve a tunne about 5 miles long between battery park and St George for the 1 train. IF they want they can dig a mile long tunnel underneath the Narrows for the R Train which might be a feasible option and a cheaper alternative giving SI residents access to the MTA subway system. IT does make sense it seems to be a better idea digging a tunnel between Manhattan and SI but that wont happen until pigs fly or if Uncle Sam gives a grant and an OK for the project but that wont happen either.

The federal government stated that they will not fund money for the seven train extension to NJ. The best option will be for the PA to build another line across the hudson or extending service from west 33rd street to the east side of Manhattan maybe grand central terminal. Besides Uncle Sam gives too much grant money to the city and sometimes the money is wasted and never put to good use.
