People from New Jersey, please confine your observations to that side of the river. Mainly because you aren't going to change our opinions, and we realize we're not going to change yours.
So only people that currently live in NYC proper can "change your opinions" on this message board?

Gee, I wonder where the stereotypes of the "NY attitude" come from?

FWIW, I didn't observe anybody, from either NY or NJ, attempt to change anybody's opinion in this thread.

The reason SI is joked about so much is because people from SI walk around all tough with their noses in the air like they own the city. The fact is, Staten Island is no more urban than many parts of Long Island, Westchester, etc. SI is not connected...Long Island has Brooklyn and Queens connected, Westchester has the Bronx connected. I meet so many people from SI who are like "hah! You live in the sticks!" meanwhile my block doesn't look much different than some blocks in SI. The only difference is the streets are more narrow in SI and the houses are probably 5 feet closer to each other than houses in Suffolk. Nassau however has the same density. I think it's the whole, "I'm so cool bro, I'm from NYC!" thing that turns people off. You really can't claim being from NYC in a NJ suburb...I mean that's essentially what it is.

SI is barely accessible...the ferry time says 25 minutes but it's really more like 35 minutes from when you get on the boat to when you get off. Then from there you are still in the middle of nowhere all the way downtown in Manhattan, so you will have to take the subway wherever...by the time you get where you are going it takes like 45 min to 1 hour from SI to Manhattan. I live 50 miles out on LI from Manhattan and it takes me 1 hour 15 via LIRR to get right in midtown. I can beat people from SI leaving at the same time. And that's with people from SI telling me I live in "the sticks". So basically there is no benefit to living in SI if it still takes you about the same amount of time to get somewhere in Manhattan as it does someone 50 miles out on LI or 50 miles up in Westchester. Take proximity to Manhattan out of the picture, and SI is useless in many people's eyes. It has nothing in common with other boroughs...no subway, it takes 1 hour on an express bus to Manhattan, it's mostly suburban, etc. If people from SI would stop trying to pretend they are big city NYC, I think people would give them a break.

I love Staten Island. I will be moving there with my mom this year. I can't stand Brooklyn anymore.

Default Soo Boring.......

I travel a lot throughout the USA and abroad. And just returned from a three months' stay in Orlando, Fl. I have visited Fl., North, South, East, and West, and like some areas better than others but, this time I said to myself let me see if I really like it enough to move out of the State of NY. And since so many people seem to be so unhappy here, maybe they see something that I do not.

I was so bored after a while, that I could not wait to return to my Staten Island. Every week, I had a new neighbor, no sense of family unity at all, the food is horrendous, and most of the people are not very knowledgeable at all. Most are from the South, and the Midwest, which I do not seem to have much in common with. How long can one look at a pool? The news were mostly about crime, and the rest of the world does not exist. I think had I remain there too long, I would have become completely illiterate.

"The grass always looks greener in someone else backyard..." this is so true. So my friends, before you move out of NYC, go and stay at the place of your choice for about three to six months, before you make the leap.

And by the way: I have lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn for a myriad of years........but, you know what,
I LOVE STATEN ISLAND.

SI has always been the red headed stepchild of the city.

I've only been there twice in my life. Took the ferry both times and never had a problem with anyone, but it was never someplace I thought about. Don't have anything negative nor positive to say about it really.

I mean..it's just "there".

I like SI.
My whole dads side of the family basically hopped of Ellis Island and on to Staten Island- This is when the Island barely had 150K people.

Mayor Bloomberg would walk the St Patty's day parade and would literally come inside my Aunts house and eat the corned beef and cabbage she made. He's been doing it for the past couple years (all because of a random phone call invitation), but I went two holidays ago and had a meal with the Mayor of NYC. That's one of my many experiences on the island. I've also been to the mall once and I'd never do it again, I really don't want to explain.

The stigma in SI is over hyped- They knock the Italian American dominance (I'm Italian), but in reality- The Italian culture and food there is wonderful- I love Italians, I'd never live anywhere that doesn't have them. I live in Newark, so I deal with the same crap as far as stereotypes and misconceptions go, but I'm happy here- IDC what people "think"- Most of the smack talk is from an experience at the airport or turnpike; how insightful. You just have to get over it- you live in friggen Todt Hill! That's basically the Beverly Hills of the Island! Quit your blubbering.
Your GRANDMOTHER was a very wise woman.

Mistake was when some idiot in charge decided to make Staten Island NYC's dump....stigma

I believed landfill or two got closed, but ask any NYer and that's what they'll think.
