I have lived in NYC for about 8 years and was forced to move out of state about 6 months ago because, after being laid off last summer, my money ran out. My current living situation is...suffice it to say it's extremely bad and unhealthy and I need to leave asap. I'm trying to get back to NY, but I still haven't been able to get a job in spite of the fact that I have an advanced degree and 12 years of solid work history. To make matters more complicated, I have student loan debt and crappy credit b/c I haven't had an income for a year and a half. Oh, and I also have a dog which further complicates finding housing (giving her up is not an option, fyi). I know there are some housing lotteries, but I'm not so sure any of those places allow dogs. Plus, with no real income and bad credit, I wouldn't even qualify for them.
In addition to applying to jobs in my field, I've been exploring nanny and housesitting jobs, as well as superintendent positions (mostly just because of the free housing). But I haven't found anything that would work out given the fact that I have a dog.
Does anyone have any ideas about where I might look for housing assistance, either in the form of live-in work situations that would allow a dog, or low-income housing options that are in a decent neighborhood?

You have answered your own question here. There are virtually no housing options in NYC for people with no income and bad credit.
