Hello! I read your posting and I can agree. It is my Great Grandparents bicentennial (1913-2013) immigrating to the United States via Ellis Island and Mexico. People do look at you crazy when you say "my great grandmother traveled onboard a steam vessel the Korona and entered the U.S. through Ellis Island". She was Episcopalian but joined the A.M.E. Church after coming to Buffalo, NY. I enjoyed your post. Perhaps we can chat sometimes. Fell feel to read my 1st post - I am becoming familiar with this site. Thanks

That's interesting, I've always wondered about that. Anyone have actual numbers? What neighborhoods immigrant descended blacks tend to live in rather than "native" blacks?

Interesting discussion. I believe that in the 1920s Caribbean immigrants made up one quarter of the Black population in Harlem.

One question I'd be interested in knowing is to what extent the descendants of the 1910s/1920s Caribbean immigrants have "melted" into the African American population or if they retained any Caribbean identity.

Also I believe about one third of NYC blacks are foreign born and about 80% of black immigrants are from the Caribbean. It would be interesting to know what the proportion Caribbean descended vs. "native" AA is among the city's black population.
