I'm looking to move out of my parents house. It's just too far away from work, and I'm tired of the long, long train rides from waaaay out in Queens to the heart of the city. What neighborhoods would you recommend for someone that makes $30,000/year and would like a place that's close to the N, Q, or R trains? So far it seems Astoria is my best choice, but I'm keeping my options open. For the record, I'm in my early twenties and supporting only myself on this income. I wouldn't mind bringing in a roommate or two to help make rent.

Astoria sounds like your best choice or perhaps Rego Park.

Why must you be on these train lines? Seems unnecessarily limiting since you can always transfer for free.

Ridgewood Queens is only a 30 minute subway ride (M Train) from the City.

I'd prefer a place by the N, Q, and R trains because those are the lines I take to work. Now that I think about it, the 4, 5, 6, and L take me there, too. I've just been limiting my search to Queens because that is the borough I'm most familiar with, aside from Manhattan.

Astoria is definitely my top choices, but if I were to expand my housing search to include all areas of the city, which neighborhoods should I consider? (Keeping in mind, of course, the rest of the information I provided in my original post.)

I'm not sure if you can afford Astoria, those are close to Manhattan prices. You may be able to find something in the UES (on the far east side) for Astoria prices. Other kinda cheap neiborhoods in Manhattan are Harlem, Hells Kitchen, LES. I would say pick any neiborhood in Queens thats close to Manhattan that you can afford. Pretty much as you move farther from Manhattan the neiborhood prices get cheaper; in order: LIC, Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside, Jackson Heights, Rego Park, Forest Hills. FH is probably close to Woodside prices, its a desirable neiborhood with some restaurants and bars.

Have you ever considered the Southern Bronx? You can have access to the B/D/2/4/5/6 lines, and Metro North! Although even with a $30,000 gross income, you may need a roomy...1 bedrooms go for about $1,000 here, and 2 bedrooms for about $1,300.

I know this is super late but if you still haven't found what you are looking for what IlonaG said about Ridgewood Queens almost seems ideal for you. The L trains stop there on Dekalb ave and Myrtle and Wyckoff ave. the area is decent and has a very diverse population and it has alot of different things to do in the area no matter what your preferences are. This as well as being 20-30 minutes from Union sq. and 14th st. so if you're looking I'd say take a look at ridgewood.
