My worse experience on LI bus was on the N40 which rides from Mineola to Freeport. Anyone who knows the area will agree that this bus runs through the worse towns in Nassau county, Hempstead, Uniondale, Roosevelt and N. Freeport. At the Hempstead terminal a man tries to bring a full size shopping cart from a supermarket onto the bus. The Female bus driver got out of her seat and told him to not even think about it. He took his groceries out of the cart and got on the bus. I thought "oh no, this is going to be one horrible ride." The man was loud and abrasive and 5 mins. into the ride he starts making sexual and profane comments. A woman yells at him and said' I got kids here. They don't need to hear that mess. He was silent for the rest of the trip. If something like that happpened on a NYC bus. That bus driver and that woman would have been dead.

I was told on this board to ignore people who sneak on the back door of the bus because a bus driver was attacked when he stood up against someone taking a free ride.

I suggest you take back your comments that it's even worse in the suburbs unless you have experienced it. For me, I have not.

Shut up, you're over exaggerating but 1000.

I took the BX4 a very busy and crowded bus. The ride went well until we got to Parkchester. A woman sitting in the "lone" seats was getting off the next stop but she got out of her seat early so an older woman could take it. A man around his 30's already seating in the "sideways" seats saw the woman getting up, rushed to block the older woman from seating there and took the seat. I know these are prime seats but is this kind of behavior necessary?

The next incident happened at Elder Ave. The bus was pretty crowded with only a few seats in the "hood" section in the back. A man see a woman with a few bags standing, like a gentleman he gets up to give an empty window seat to the woman. What the woman does was sit in his seat and puts her bags on the empty window seat. Being a gentleman he just looked and nodded his head and stood for the rest of the ride. Why are some people so self absorbed and care so little for their fellow man?

I've taken the N6 of the LI bus and people at the very busy Jamaica stops always stand in an orderly line to get on the bus. At every NYC bus stop it's always a mad rush to get on the bus. Many times I've seen people not even allow riders to get off the bus and the driver has even yelled at passenger to wait for the handicapped person to board the bus first. I've heard people grumble when this they see a handicapped person get on the bus first.

What is wrong with some New Yorkers?
Many Americans generally don't have any character. What are you going to do?

Funny you say that. I just watched an episode of Americas Most Wanted. This serviceman goes out to a club near Ft. Bragg with his Army buddy. They're in line waiting to get in and two yo- boys stroll up to the front cutting in front of everyone. Well this black woman tells them to head to the back and they respond by calling her all kinds of sexual names. The serviceman hearing this demand these two thugs apologize to her.

Do you know they let these two thugs into the club and a few minutes later they shot the guy in the head killing him instantly.

There are too many people who are so far gone that even a slight reproach of their uncivil behavior could lead to your death. It's just not worth it.

It would take all of 30 seconds for the other people to board the bus, pay their fare, and sit down. There is no "law" stating people in wheelchairs have priority on a bus line. They already get 1/2 fare --- why, I don't know but they do --- what more do they expect????.

Additionally, why would a bus driver stop the bus to allow an already packed to capacity bus become even more packed by stopping to let more people -- including wheelchair people -- on the bus??? Common sense does NOT prevail!! And, if the people who are in those 3 seats on both sides are "elderly or handicapped", why do they have to get up for the wheelchair????? Is that fair?????

About my comment that they're already on wheels. It's true. If you're in a wheelchair and only plan on going 6 or 8 blocks, why the heck are you inconveniencing everyone on the bus???? You're already on wheels.... roll along to your destination! I've seen this so many times. The bus stops and you see the driver getting out of his seat. Most people on the bus sigh. The ramp thing is lowered, the person in the wheelchair rolls on, the driver has to raise the ramp thing, the wheelchair person rolls on, banging into people without so much as an apology, the driver has to find and secure the straps onto the wheelchair, and then gets back in his seat. We go a few stops and the wheelchair person presses the strip to get off. Now we have to go through it all again, only in reverse.

For all the time this takes, the wheelchair person could have wheeled their way to their destination.
Wow! I thought that knee problem of yours woud give you some compassion. When it gets worse and you might end up in a wheelchair. Please remember these words you wrote and not use the bus and make life more difficult for the rest of us.

BTW, if you know anything about wheelchairs you would know that the battery life is very short and it's not some sort of car.

LOL! That reminds me of waiting in line at the Gristede's on 96 and Broadway and the checkout girl holds up the line to have a conversation on her cellphone. I guess that's a NY cultural norm. Where is a manager when you need one?

And Lital thought I was exaggerating. I admit I would like to take a more aggressive role in dealing with people in NYC who do unsavory acts but it's clear and reenforced by certain postings made on this thread that I wouldn't receive back up from others and or it might include my death.

My only negative experience on NYC buses was last summer --- some perverted creep decided it was okay for him to whip out his -_______ and start masturbating right there on the bus. The bus driver did nothing about it except let the guy get off the bus. Sick.
If I were a woman, I'd get me a water pistol. I'd fill it full of some of that incredibly HOT HOT HOT pepper sauce they sell. And, when some guy whipped out Mr Happy, I'd let fly!

Owwiiee.

I do have compassion for people --- very much so. However, I also believe in common sense. Why leave 5 or 10 people standing in the cold when they can get on the bus and out of the way in 30 seconds only to take 10 minutes to get a wheelchair person on the bus?????

My knee problem is bad but it's getting better everyday. However, if the day comes that I do end up in a wheelchair, I will have consideration for others. When I use my cane, people are considerate and I appreciate that so, so much. On the other hand, I'm not taking 10 minutes to board a bus, get through a door, or anything else. In other words, someone being considerate to me is not imposing on 10 other people.
