I graduated SUNYSB in 1987. Apart from the food on campus, I have only good things to say about my experience there.

I'm a recent graduate of Stony Brook. From what it sounds like, you seem to think Stony Brook is in New York City, which it is not. It is on Long Island (if you take the Stony Brook LIRR train to Manhattan/NYC, it will take you close to two hours to get there).
So, if you're coming because you want to enjoy NYC...I'd suggest a closer school (Hofstra, NYU, etc...) rather than Stony Brook. Don't get me wrong, Stony Brook can be fun and has made HUGE improvements in the last ten years, but it's far enough away from the city to where you may not enjoy it that much.

Good luck.

It's a good school, especially for the sciences, but it's a long way from NYC, around a two-hour train ride.

If you're looking for schools in NYC, look into Columbia, NYU, Fordham, The New School, Hunter, Pace, City College, etc. Or specialized schools like Pratt or Cooper Union, depending on what you're interested in.

Why? Stony Brook maintains a Manhattan campus, too.

Stony Brook University Manhattan in NYC

The food has gotten a lot better in recent years from what I've heard. Stony Brook is a good deal. It's a good school. It's routinely listed as one of the better bang for your bucks schools.

FYI, they have a few rich alumni who have poured tons of money into the school over the last decade.

BTW not sure if OP was talking about LI campus or the satellite campus they have in the city now?
