I'm soon to be pre-qualified for 350k. I want to buy a 2 family home with a driveway. The question is: Where?? What's a safe-ish place that has homes for sale in my price range? An area that probably is on the way up not down. Any advice is greatly appreciated... I can fix a place up nicely and I don't mind industrial areas if needed.

Thanks for any advice... I am excited about being a home owner and having a tenant help with the bills. I don't want to mess this up so the big search for the near perfect place is on!

Bronx... Queens... which exact neighborhoods?

The Bronx of course..you can get into some great neighborhoods with front/backyards, garage parking, etc in that price range: Pelham Gardens, Indian Village, Morris Park, Pelham Parkway,Pelham Bay, Pelham Parkway, Country Club, Throggs Neck (all have varying degrees of public transportation).

You can also get into some suburban style homes with front/backyards/driveways/garages etc, in the Southern Bronx if you want to be close to the city/lots of public transportation options.

One of the Bronx's best qualities is affordability...and it is the most affordable of all boroughs in NYC. If you are seeking a $350,000 2 family in NYC, look no further than the Bronx. I cannot guarantee that you will find a 2 family in every one of those neighborhoods at that price and with every amenity you desire, but if it does exist in NYC, it is in the Bronx.

And just for the record, you should not ask if these neighborhoods have 2 family homes priced "for so little"...you should ask why everywhere else is priced so exorbitantly. Change your mindset and you will realize those who are paying a million dollars for an 800 sf co-op are the crazy ones, not you.

Whoa, Sobro. Why the attack? There is a huge spread between 350k for a 2-family and a mil for a small co-op. I would simply expect houses to go for more in the Bronx because I think real estate in ALL of NYC is expensive.

Of course not!

Purposeless posting shouting out neighborhoods w/o regards to the OP's budget; which we don't even know. He only knows the loan amount which he is being considered for. He did not state how much of a down payment.

At $350K, I really don't know anywhere at that price, except possibly deep in the hood, probably somewhere in Queens, Jamaica probably; Rockaway is a good bet at that price.

To the OP,

A large condo or coop might be a consideration. Say a 3 bdrm, and get a roommate. Going this route gets you into better neighborhoods.

Any decent neighborhood and the price range probably begins at $500K.
