This is true.

No matter how many pig hooves and malt liquors we bring our wizard overlords, they are unable to make time stop in NYC. Why oh why, wizard overlords, won't you make it be "the days" forever in NYC? Why must linear time march on here like it does everywhere else? Curses.

I'm sure you've heard of 'friends with benefits'. Roommate with benefits, same thing. You'd be surprised the number of ordinary women sleeping with men simply for a stable place to live. They're usually called wives!!

In any event, Turtlrcreek has done a fair job of highlighting. The main question for you is in definning" upscale". In a city of extremes, of millionaires and billionaires, upper and middle classes, working class and underclass, "upscale" is a floating standard.

No matter what your non-NYC income or lifestyle, unless you are truly rich, you will live less well in NYC.

"Comfortable" in NYC is a total and complete subjective!

For example,

Some will find living in any type of 'apartment' building to be un-comfortable (I fall into this category).
Others would find only a 'doorman' building comfortable; still others would find a 'doorman' building un-comfortable (my gf falls into this category).

Here on this board someone posted how they found Park Slope unappealing (too many brownstones, duh!). The person desired a more "industrial" environment, which if I recall was found in Greenpoint. To each his own, but such preferences will effect costs.

Generally, though, an upper-middle lifestyle for a single starts at around $150K. Of course, living outside of Manhattan in a non-trendy neighborhood or suburb can decrease that by $25-50K.

I agree, 100K is a nice comfortable salary for a single person in NYC, especially if you live outside of Manhattan. You can eat well everyday, live by yourself in a safe area close to the city in a large apartment, have all of the necessary expenses like internet, blackberry, cable etc, go out twice a week, have a gym membership, buy nice designer clothes once in awhile, buy electronics, travel internationally once or twice a year and even save 20k or so a year.

My estimate for a comfortable lifestyle, living in a 1BR apt in midtown or FiDi with doorman, eating out a couple times a week, shopping for non essentials now and then would be about $150K.

I seriously doubt you can do this on $100K, especially after taxes and 401K deduction. Your net income is around $4700 a month. Your rent, utilities etc takes up half the paycheck and you are left with $2400 to spend on groceries, lunches, commuting costs, gym, entertainment etc. You are lucky to save couple hundred dollars a month.

To the OP, your rent will be your biggest expense. Your disposable income will be dependent on how much you pay for rent.

100k is enough to live in Manhattan comfortably for a single person.
Net is around $5500.

Good studio $2000
Health insurance, say $200 through employer
Groceries $500
Restaurants $600
Subway $100
Cabs $100
Going out $500

Which leaves $1500 a month which you can save or buy something for yourself.

I overestimated on my earlier post. I got this from paycheck.com calculator assuming a 10% 401K withholding. No insurance withheld.

Well, you can still live without 401K.
