Hi I am considering going to NYC for college. The colleges I am interested in are Columbia and St johns (I have been accepted into both).
Are there any good towns near these universities? For Columbia - around Washington Heights or the Bronx and Manhattan towns near it?
For St. Johns and place in Jamaica, Queens that is a good place for a college student?
My budget for an apartment is $800 a month and I want to be around other college students and clubs in the city.I have seen apartments on craigslist but I do not know whether to trust craigslist or not. Also how do you use the subway I have looked online and it looks very confusing? Or should I bring my vehicle as I heard Queens is very suburban?
I am a 19yr old female college student moving this summer. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Yes, live on campus and ditch the car. It really is the most economical way for a student to live in NYC.
Not familiar with the area around St John's, but Harlem/ Wash Heights are "block by block" neighborhoods, meaning one block may be ok and the next block down is ruled by the neighborhood drug dealer and known for violence/ crime/ drug traffic. The area south of Columbia (Upper West Side to 110th Street and Morningsidd Heights above that is nice & safe, but not in your $800 price range....possibly your jr or sr years you could get a roommate or two and find a 2-3 br there for $1600-2400/mo, but I would definitely start on campus.
Plus, it's difficult to meet people when you commute to school. You'll make more friends faster & easier by living on campus and getting plugged in to the school's community.
