I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm struggling to sift through the old threads and pick out the best tips for Midtown in particular. I'll be living in NYC this upcoming summer and working in Midtown (W 52nd and 6th Avenue), and I'm trying to find a relatively cheap, safe place to sublet this summer.

Any suggestions for neighborhoods? I'm totally clueless on this, so any help is appreciated. I'm a mid-20s professional woman, if relevant.

You have to define what cheap means to you and whether you are willing to live with roommates & also how long a commute you can tolerate.

For example, if you can afford only $750-$800 a month for a room, then you would most likely want to look in neighborhood in Queens that is accessible to either the N,Q, R, B, D, E, F or M trains.

In Queens a few neighborhoods that fit this description are Astoria and Jackson Heights. For a mid-20's person, Astoria might be a good fit for you.

I could go up to $1200. I'd prefer not to live with a roommate and a <30 minute commute would be ideal.

I'll check out Astoria and Jackson Heights. Thanks for the tips.

What bout Upper West Side between W 70th and W 80th? Is it reasonably safe / have a decent assortment of restaurants and bars nearby?

There are all sorts of summer sublets that pop up, most often posted in Craigslist. Many are from students, so you can also see if colleges have websites/bulletin boards for that kind of thing. There are also all sorts of rooming houses in Manhattan that you can find via Google. From your description, I'm guessing that you have something like an internship with a major corporation; if so, ask them if they have suggestions.

Do consider a roommate, though. You may think that you're too old for a roommate, but it's a good way to save money, a good way to be able to live closer to work, and a good way to make a few initial connections.

I agree with this advice. You are not going to find a place to live alone on the Upper West Side between 70s and 80s. Even further up, you will not find that. I had a friend who was looking for studios in this area approx 8 months ago and she considered herself lucky to find something (a studio) for $1700.

Having a roommate might not so bad especially if you are not home much and it's temporary.

Thanks for the advice. If I did happen to find a place in that area, how is the neighborhood? Safe? Good restaurants/bars nearby?

Thanks!

The colleges and universities rent out their dorms precisely for summer interns. Might be at the high end of your budget, but call NYU, Columbia, Parsons, New School, NY Law, Brooklyn Law, etc.

Yes, it's a great neighborhood. Tons of bars/restaurants/transportation/shopping. Lovely architecture. Central Park is nearby too.
