If you go to the movie theaters in Forest Hills & Astoria, shows starting before 3PM on Mon-Thur. have a cheaper matinee price as well as the first show/s on Fridays & Saturdays.
AMC Theater at Jamaica Center in Queens (last stop E train). Tickets are 8$ weekdays and they have bargain tuesday-6$. Theater is big, screens are huge. A lot of people from Forest Hills and Astoria come there. And its never crowded.
In Midwood section of Brooklyn, there is the Kent on Coney Island Avenue. They charge $5 for any movie on Wednesdays and same price for weekend matinee. Unfortunately, place has only 3 screens.
You can get AMC Gold tickets for around 7.50 a piece. Google around to find them online. I've used them at a few different AMC theaters in manhattan without any issues.
Agree about AMC, which most people aren't aware of. Also, although this isn't "cheapest," the Quad and Cinema Village in Manahttan manage to keep their admissions a dollar or two below the rest, while showing good movies. It's possible that if you're a serious movie-goer, an IFC membership might be a good deal over the course of a year.
