in The Bronx? I know it must be the area surrounding the Jerome Park Reservoir so I would imagine it's the area covered by Bailey Avenue to Jerome Avenue then from Van Cortlandt Park to Kingsbridge Rd?
Or is it a more localized location like just the schools (DWC, BXHSSC, Lehman, Walton HS)?
Have there ever been any disputes concerning where it is? Covers a wide area from secluded quiet streets like Van Cortlandt Park South by the Amalgamated Apts to rough areas like E 198th street
LOL,there are always arguments about Bronx neighborhood boundaries.
I think the name originated with a race track named after Leonard Jerome ,who had a vast week end estate there. The racetrack was condemned and removed when the reservoir was created in 1890.
The first Belmont Stakes( named after Jerome's friend and Bronx neighbor August Belmont) races were held at Jerome Park race track.
Jerome's daughter was the mother of Winston Churchill.
It covers a big area because it was a huge estate. The Jerome house was where Villa Ave is now in Bedford Park.
Belmont's estate was equally huge so at one time the "Belmont section" of The Bronx included The Bronx Zoo and The Botanical Garden in addition to little Italy and what is now known as Belmont. At one time virtually all of what are now a dozen different neighborhoods were entirely owned by either Jerome or Belmont.
The boundaries shrink and shift... no wonder there are arguments.
