Artists are scattered all over the neiborhoods. There is no one neiborhood. decades ago they lived in the same hood but things are different now. someone said they live in red hook now, that is a terrible hood. bushwick is also pretty bad. As far as galleries go there are more in chelsea then any other neighborhoods, so by proxy you'll find artist types in that neiborhood.

I'm a graphic designer. And whoever said that graphic design isn't art, read a freaking book.

I completely agree. Could you give me any advice on how you were able to find a job? If I do end up moving to NYC I'm also worried about how I'd find a job. I imagine it being incredibly cutthroat but I'm also curious where you could work other than an ad agency?

I'm currently a freelancer at a studio. Most of my jobs have been acquired through my network. I kept in touch with a lot of my professors, who also work in the field, and have met quite a few people through them. Networking is crucial for any artistic career.
Other than an ad agency, you can work in a design studio (which I prefer), in-house at any company that has an art department, you can freelance on your own. Most graphic designers start out at design studios. Hope this helps!
