in 1977 when I was a teen about the exact same place. I was on a summer tour program and we had lunch at Lincoln Center then the bus headed south on B'way to the Ambassador theater to see Godspell
At 56th street heading south on B'way I was absolutely amazed at all the neon around, but unlike B'way and 7th Avenue today, back in those days you had porn palaces in the high 40's and even low 50's with embarrassing smutty names. At that time I thought that B'way and 7th where the theaters were was where all the undesirables and hookers hung out, i didn't realize until months later that it was the sidestreets like 42 street and 8th Avenue that were where all the problems were
I thought that Times Sq was way more exciting back then because it was so intimidating. It's like, how exciting can big splashy hotels, Starbucks, Duane Reades, and countless other logos you can see online and in other cities after awhile?
there was something real majestic about entering Times Square from the 50's, but today the thrill is gone IMO
I don't mind if I have to pass through Times Square when it's not as busy. It seems a lot smaller to me now that I'm living here and it's not some "far away magical place".
i live near times square. although i hate the daily grind, and the rude obnoxious tourists, i love this area at night or early morning.
i usually go to work around 5 am before anyones out so all you see is lights, empty streets, its just something else. im really gonna miss the city when i leave.
No, with me it's become completely hate, especially since they closed off Broadway to traffic. Apart from the ugliness, apart the the contemptible renting of Times Square for PR projects, I was irate to discover that there is no longer even a bus that cuts from west to east, as they used to down Broadway.
I honestly avoid Times Square like the plague unless I'm feeling the need to browse the Sanrio shop and squeal at all the pink glittery things. Which only happens once a year, I promise.
That store is the only reason I go to TS! Except I'm there every other month, so I get to experience the good and the not so good. I will admit I love all the lights at night, everytime I am there.

How so , ive never had a in your face rudeness , but they do break the rules alot...
a pleasure to be able to walk a straight line on 8th Avenue north of 42 street instead a a zig-zag previously done to dodge hookers, winos, junkies, thieves, although that straight line walk today is pretty dull and uneventful
