Zipcar is good for just a few hours but for a full day they're expensive. Other sites like Hertz and Enterprise are much more expensive renting in NYC per day vs in NJ or out in Queens. What would be the best location to rent from that's still a reasonable distance from NYC?

Thanks

The Enterprise in Bensonhurst was always pretty reasonable (at least much cheaper than others), Speedy in Park Slope was reasonable as well.
Some of the rental places in Jersey City were cheaper but never used them

If you use Zipcar's referral program, you get $25 for every person who joins. I used to do that and rent cars for the whole weekend through Zipcar for free. What was cool is you don't have to worry about gas, insurance, etc. and if you go over the alotted 200 miles, the referral credits will cover that as well. However, they do have a limit on the number of days you can have the vehicle (I think 3).

Also try Rent A Wreck. I've used them a few times.. smaller company so less car styles to choose from, but a lot cheaper than the big national companies.

The airport locations are usually less expensive than the local offices in the city for the major companies. If you can rent out of the city, as in you don't have so much luggage that you need a car service, or don't mind an extra bit of driving, check the rates at White Plains Airport, HPN.

I just rented a Hertz car for $245 for the whole week with unlimited miles to drive to Florida on Saturday (taxes brought it to about $314). If day by day is to much, rent it for the week and bring it back early.

You have to watch with some agencies if you bring the car back early, as some will make you pay a penalty for reserving the car and then returning early. It's a way of discouraging the practice of getting a less expensive rate by booking extra days that are not used.
