It also depends on what kind of Mexican food you are looking for. I really miss the fresh authentic regional cuisine you can find in southern California. But sometimes I also want the old school refried beans and yellow rice that could be found in every Mexican-American joint when I was a kid. Of course there is also Tex-Mex and southwest specialties that are a completely different animal.

There is no good real Mexican in New York.

The only substitute is cuisine influenced by Mexican like Dos Caminos and Rosa Mexicano.

So not true. There are many more Mexican immigrants now. I've had amazing tacos from taco trucks in Washington Heights, Jackson Heights, and Red Hook. There are even a couple of new immigrant places up near me, I just haven't found one I love enough to recommend without reservation. However, if you need an El Salvadoran place - the pupusas up here are to die for.

In '95 I ordered lunch from La Chinita 4 days out of 5. That place was the best. Thanks for bringing back such delicious memories.

It's been a while. That strip of 8th Ave is now Pinkberry/Duane Reade/Starbucks and twee sandwich and burger shops between the few hold-out gay bars.

I hope we can find some good spots! Hubs and I moving to NY from CA. He's been there for 6 weeks without me, and even when I was there visiting we couldn't find a good Mexican food spot. Here in California, there are amazing Mexi-restaurants EVERYWHERE! Guess I'll have to get my fill before I make the move over myself!
