We will be staying near former world trade center. If there is a better serious play happening during march 21-24, please advise. Also, if we arrive about 6p March 20, Sunday, at our hotel, what touristy or very New York activity would be perfect after 4 hours of traveling, easy to get to after dropping off our bags? A dinner/comedy show would be perfect with New York humor. I'm a former NY but my son is pure Colorado and I'd like to inspire him to want to apply to NYU, or appreciate the city.

Don't take a bike taxi anywhere. They're grossly expensive and if you have two good legs or a MetroCard, why would you need one?

If you're staying near the former World Trade Center site, you could wander down to Battery Park to get a look at the Statue of Liberty. I'm not sure if the Staten Island Ferry is running on Sundays or what the schedule is, but that's a great (less expensive) way to see the statue. You could also wander around Wall Street or walk up through Chinatown.

I think it runs every half hour on Sundays until relatively late and then it runs once an hour?

If you are truly adventurous, you can stand in line for tix to Upright Citizens Brigade improv Sunday night. Definitely very New York. And there is usually a very cool guest or two:
UCB Theatre - New York - Shows - ASSSSCAT 3000

Oh geez, I wish I had seen the advice regarding bike taxis before this afternoon. Three of us were charged $35 a piece to go from 50th and Sixth Ave to Penn Station (32nd St and Seventh). I just got home and am checking the web to find out what others' opinions are on pedicabs. I thought it would be a fun experience, but we should have asked the pricing BEFORE we got in the cart. We live and learn, I guess :P
