The LES is not on a downfall. It does, however, continue to be a grungy/hipster area, so some folks will interpret that as being dangerous/poor. It is also no where close to being a ghetto or a horrible area...

i guess there are hipsters who are afraid of danger, and those who aren't, and plenty in between
I've never lived there, but the impression I get from walking around is it's not very good in the LES, also I was at a party at this fancy lounge and when we were leaving we had to pass by some dingy looking apartments with a couple young guys, shouting things out the door to us, it was intimidating.
If you want to see how LES looked back in 1985 watch the movie Mixed Blood. Highly recommended. Alpabhet city was in those days completely bombed out.
never saw that movie but i know what you're talking about. my sister and her bf-at-the-time were squatters in alphabet city in the late 80's. we were beyond horrified, as in, 'girl, what are you thinking!!?'. she called it 'homesteading' (that bf was a bad influence. smoked weed and likely sold her a lot of nonsense). not long after, the building was condemned and taken down by the city. the bf's mom was mentioned on the news as someone who had to be 'removed by the city' before demolition
Back in the days LES was like a "mini South Bronx". And scars from that time period can still today be seen here and there.
