I graduated from Madison in 2004 and even back then it was becoming much worse; at that time a few school have closed and we had a crazy over population. I dont know how it is now, but if you are in that area I would say Murrow (cant be zoned to it you have to get accepted as far as I know)
Do private schools count? If yes, I'd recommend the Big Apple Academy. The private school with Russian language inclination but really good in everything from educational process to the safety matters. My daughter has been attending it from kindergarten and is in the 5th grade now. This year they've opened a high school as well, but it's too fresh yet to speak about (though I've heard no negative comments for the time being).
btw, they've made up a new website recently www.bigappleacademy.com

I've been away for awhile,so I don't even know if this school is still open but Thomas Jefferson High School on Pennsylvania Avenue in ENY was always pretty high in violence, low in grad rates and just plain scary.
Best: Edward R. Murrow HS. It's not like a traditional HS because the students get to choose their own classes but to an extent of course. They can pick their own ECs, gym classes, English classes (European Lit was one of the options for sophomore year, American Classics was an option for freshmen), and can ask for Honors classes if they wish. They also get an OPTA which is basically a free period where they can study in the library or go get lunch. The OPTAs can be any time of day so if their first class is an OPTA, they can come to school an hour later than most . Also, Murrow doesn't have "first period," or second period" but rather "A Band" and "B Band." Located in a manly Jewish neighborhood and there's a nice park across the street. They also utilize Midwood's football field for some of their outdoor gym classes.
Midwood HS, Leon M. Goldstein HS are also great options.
Worst: Lincoln HS, Madison HS (Nicknamed "Madhouse"), John Dewey HS, Fort Hamilton HS, New Utrecht HS.
