I knew a little about the hotel's reputation before I booked. The more I read about it, the more shocked and fascinated I become. I can afford a nicer hotel, but am so, so intrigued. Is curiosity going to kill the cat? Thanks!
the Carter does have a checkered past but you'll be safe. Times Square is flooded with police 24/7 these days because of the threat of terrorism. Police can be seen on that block, just hanging around, at any hour of day or night.
As with any hotel in the city, check for bedbugs, though the critters know no socioeconomic bounds as there have been outbreaks in some of the better hotels, too. However, it's all in the way the infestation is managed as to whether or not there is a repeat occurrence. Nothing says "class" like a former legitimate theatre turned "gentleman's club" in a hotel property. I can understand curiosity, but I don't think that I would stay there for free.

I am not sure what the threat is, but if it's bedbugs, you can easily bring them home with you and spend thousands of dollars and time and energy getting rid of them from your home. Just know what you are getting into.
I personally would never stay at a seedy hotel if i could easily afford a better one.
Watch out for bedbugs! That is sound advice. The hotel has fallen off the "Dirtiest hotels in America" list about 2 years ago. Very basic, and much of the Times square rifraff moved from the main drag due to a large police presence. although some remain.Keep your valuables in the safe, and don't flash large amounts of cash and keep your wallet in your inner coat or pants side pocket as pickpockets have an easy time due to the crowds. other then that, Enjoy NYC!
My brother stayed there and said it was the dirtiest place he has ever stayed in. And he was including his tour in Iraq as a Marine. Have you seen the pictures of the rooms? Disgusting.
I wasn't talking about safety in my previous post; I should have clarified.
If you don't mind mice, rats, and other vermin crawling over you while you sleep, go for it!
