The Marquis de Sade had a more realistic view of women than the producers of these shows. Hammer would effectively use women like these in his movie depictions of Dracula's underlings.

Yes, I think it does hurt the image. That being said I have been living on Staten Island now for 21 years, I was 21 when I moved here from Queens to the South Shore. I have come across many of these types of people, the look, the all cash businesses, etc and I have just tried to stay away. It is easy to spot when dad is a house painter for example and they live in a 1.5 million dollar home, etc. This is around and does exist. I have children ages 7 to 22 years old and with the younger two I have put them in Catholic school this year (I'm not bashing public schools, my older kids went to PS, but I wasn't happy anymore) and we have met some really wonderful, warm and giving people. I had just about given up on the borough too. I think you find some real- salt- of- the- earth people in older, more well established neighborhoods here. Some of the areas are beautiful. Some of the people are too.
I think that white middle America has a new found fascination with how ethnic white's here in the NY area live with this show Mob Wives and Jersey Shore, I even caught my mom watching some show I forgot on which channel iabout these ghetto Russian ppl living in Brighton Beach.
