Muggings and robberies in the middle of the day? Is this a common thing - I mean, should I be taking taxis everywhere around there?
It really depends on the area, and how use to an envirorment like this are you? I mean Brooklyn has the parts that you should drive in a taxis all day then it has the parts where thats not needed. For Example you are goin to be staying in i'm guessin an appartment in Bed-stuy, Bed-stuy is bad, some blocks and streets worse then others. I mean if your gunna be in Bed-stuy the whole time mabe a cab everywhere, but for example downtown brooklyn that wouldn't be needed. Do you know any areas other then bed-stuy that you'll be goin to in Brooklyn?

I'll be traveling in to the main parts of NYC each day (Times Square, etc). My only experience in Bed-Stuy would be in the house.

Oh ok, well Times Square is completely safe! I mean foot traffic is crazy and what not, i mean be aware of your surroundings still cuz anything can still happen, but its way safer then bed-stuy. If your going to be coming back to Bed-stuy at night please take a cab.

Oh yes, been to Times Square before, felt very safe there... which is why I am a little nervous about coming back to Bed-Stuy after reading about it. Agreed to stay without knowing the full story, now kind of wishing I had just booked a hotel.

It happens, but not on a frequent basis. If you are used to traveling around low income areas then you won't have a problem.

Its ok, you should be alright as long as you don't hang out around evening to night fall, keep to your self, and make sure your with people who know the area well. With all that said, enjoy your time in NYC
