At the Met, a promising sign: The 'Hot Dog King' is back in business
The competition can be so intense that police have been called in over the years to settle turf wars and other disputes. And now, the return of these vending wars that define the street economy in many parts of New York City could be a bellwether for the small-business owners who, like Rossi, rely on tourists and workers for much of their sales.
Through sheer tenacity, Rossi claimed his curbside location. He spent nights in jail, he said, and prepared his own legal briefs to defend his claim: that his right to vend there, without paying the city, stemmed from an arcane state law dating to the Civil War that allowed veterans free vending permits. https://artdaily.com/news/127798/At-...s#.X1LRiVepHcs
Amen. This was the best NYC story I've read in months. I am about ready to jump on the train to the city just to buy a hot dog from this man.
That's the way I felt when I read a story - I think I posted it here - about a guy selling newspapers on the UWS.
In a way, this is one of the things that make NYC great - all these wonderful individual stories, all the people we may bump into in the course of the day, since we're not trapped in cars like other cities.
Is this the same guy? I always buy from him when I go to the Met because my son's a USMC vet .
ETA: this was taken a couple of years ago...
I always go to him, too - because he has knishes. My perfect "me day" is spending the whole day alone wandering the Met and getting a knish to eat on the way to the train. I'm glad this guy has fought the fight to keep them there!

I could never quite get behind knishes. Am I going to the wrong places? Am I somehow eating them wrong?
