I was wondering.................

Does anyone know.

How come Brooklyn and Queens are not considered in popular thought as being Long Island even though they so clearly are on Long Island? No boundary (man made or otherwise) separates the two city counties (Kings and Queens) from Long Island "proper" (Nassau and Suffolk) yet people always think or talk otherwise.

And has this false distinction always been made? If not then when did it begin and why?

They're part of the geographic landmass that is "Long Island" but they are also boroughs of NYC, which Nassau and Suffolk are not - they are just counties in NY state. The Bronx and Westchester are also connected, but the Bronx is part of NYC, while Westchester is a county in NY state.

Moderator: Can I have this question (sans the last two "answers") moved to the Long Island forum please? Perhaps somewhere there might be knowledgeable enough to give my serious question a serious answer.

Seriously...it's nothing more than a mindset. Residents of New York City have always distinguished it from the rest of geographical Long Island. And when you combine that with a frightening ignorance of geography (which is epidemic throughout the United States), voila! In some places, you can actually start an argument if you try to tell people that Brooklyn is situated on Long Island.

But why this mindset?

Brooklyn and Queens are part of Long Island geographically, but not politically. It's that simple.
