This can't bode well for New York state: A new poll shows that more than a third of residents under 30 want to move away within five years, notes DNAinfo. The big reasons: Jobs, taxes, and the cost of living. The percentage of wannabe bag-packers drops from 36% to 24% for those living specifically in New York City, notes the Gothamist blog. A hefty 77% of the 941 poll respondents of all ages consider the state expensive for an average family.

That's probably true of most states. Probably for SOME states the percentage is much higher... think Alabama, Mississippi, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho. West Virginia, Indiana, Tennessee, and on and on.

This type of polling suggests nothing because; a) the sampling group is never identified, and b) sixty seven percent of residents under thirty are staying in NYC. Furthermore, "jobs, taxes, and the cost of living" fair no better here than anywhere else in the US. It's all relative.

They should really have an upstate vs. downstate breakdown. I bet 90%+ of those wanting to leave are upstate. Economically and culturally, it's really 2 different states. Or if there's not a significant difference, I'm sure the reasons for leaving would be different. Downstate it would be "cost of living" and upstate it would be "lack of jobs".

That's 67.7% of all under 30 people who want to stay in New York. That's a lot that want to stay!

This has little to do with NYC.There have been other surveys done that say just the opposite of NYC residents.

News: 2 out of 3 people who post about NYC on city-data.com don't live in NYC, don't work in NYC, and have never even been to NYC outside of Times Square and midtown. Their only impressions of the city come from TV and movies.

Do you think that's really true? I've posted in two areas that I've lived in before...I couldn't imagine doing much posting about an area foreign to me.
I know there are a lot of posts that go:
"Hi, I;m moving to New York and would like a 2 bedroom apartment in a nice safe area for $1000" but I'll bet a lot of these are people who only post once.
