Hey you guys! There's an AWESOME position. Permanent pay will be 22-28k, but you MUST qualify for this position, so please read the requirements first! :-D

OH yeah, I forgot--you must be bilingual to score this one!

...but here's a REAL score for 30k! You MUST have FOUR years of experience and at LEAST an Associates degree if you want to land this jazzy position.

Admin position @ Investment Firm in Manhattan. WHOPPING 30k a year!!

My first admin job out or college was more than 30k. Are people really desperate enough to apply. I can't imagine being able to live on that salary in NYC or anywhere else.

YOu better believe I sent them an email LOL. I encourage everyone to shoot these people an email. I told them they should be embarrassed to post something like that. ARE THEY SERIOUS?

I've been looking on Craigslist, Monster and the likes. I see MANY positions that require extensive experience AND a Bachelors degre. They're paying an average of $35,000/year. WHAT?!?!?!?! I repeat, THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE A 4-year degree!!!

I am not sure about you guys, but I'm hardballing it and waiting for something that pays at least $50,000/year. I know I didn't go to college to be eating Top Ramen for the rest of my life. Employers CAN afford to pay a few more thousand a year, but with so many people coming to NYC in search of their "dream" and "lots of jobs & money", I guess they have the upperhand on us, huh? (Give it a few more business quarters. Things ARE improving and this *hopefully* should NOT last for long...knock on wood.)

Am I being unreasonable to want $50,000/year???? I prefer not to mess up my resume and job hop, so holding off seems like the responsible thing for me to do. I'm taking temp jobs at the moment for flexibility to interview. Of course you get soooo many interviewers asking why you have been temping the last 2 years. I have had to explain to them, a million times, that I went back to college full-time. Besides that, are they TOTALLY unaware that we're in the midst of one of the worst recessions of the century???? I know MANY who have been unemployed for over a year.

Feedback? How's your job search going and what is the minimum salary you're willing to accept? How do you feel about things here in NYC? How much do you feel one has to make in order to live comfortably?

I say it takes a reasonable 50k/year, unless you're in a relationship and have a partner that is making an equally good salary as well. Even on 50k, you'll be able to pay the bills and have some fun, but you won't be putting much in your savings account at the end of the day. Retirement looks like it will be happening, for me, when I'm 95, if these NYC employers don't stop being a bunch of cheapskates.
Try personal banking at the big banks. Your base will be below 50K most likely but with incentives you should land above that mark. NYC is fast becoming a place of the very rich and the poor. This city is no place for middle class folks.

I didn't exactly have stellar grades or any of that, just more experience than average for people in my age group.

I'm not sure why I got so many responses... I will let you in on a secret, though. Monster, Career Builder, Hot Jobs, etc are garbage. It's crawling with recruiters, spammers, and men in the UK who need you to run to Western Union before they can hire you. LinkedIn's job section is where I got the most response. It was great, and I highly recommend it! I think it's so difficult to get through to the employer these days because a lot of them have loyalty to one temp or staffing agency, so regular applicants don't have a fighting chance. LinkedIn's process is about as close to directly applying as you can get- AND you can see if your resume was ever even read. A lot of times it never gets opened, which is why those jobs that we thought we were SO perfect for never get back to us.
Linkedin is pretty good place. I think because they charge a hefty price for employers to post it helps weed out the nutcases, scammers and other undesirables. I would advise anyone looking for a professional job to have a Linkedin profile.

Monster is hit or miss. I got contacted by a recruiter from Bank of America in Charlotte for a job paying 70-80K. Interviewed with hiring manager but wanted someone with more experience. However lots of scammers on Monster even more on Career Builder. I can live with Monster but the moment I posted my resume on Career Builder I was bombarded by scam jobs.

Oh well I'm employed now.

What I really love is the hours they are expecting the person to work for this crap money:

"8:00 to 5:30"

"8:30 to 5:30"

The first one goes into overtime in case they didn't notice. They should be reported to the NYS Dept. of Labor.

Well what's really scary is that they will get 1000 resumes the first day, and many will have advanced degrees.

That always makes me laugh. It's like they are trying to get an extra hour out of an already underpaid position! What a joke.

I hope I hit the lotto soon so I can tell all these jobs to shove it!

There is no one in their right mind that can survive off of that small of a salary in NYC. I mean, they can survive, per se, but literally on the ABSOLUTE basics. The idiot that takes a job that pays like that deserves the crummy lifestyle that comes with it.
