Hello I would like to buy the ipod touch (the last generation). I am from Italy.
Today I was giving a look in some shops near Times Square (that kind of shop for turists) and when I asked the price of ipod touch 8gb last generation ( I saw it, and it seemed to be original) it was 190 $ (very good price). I wanted to buy it, but I was scared that it was a cheat because when I asked the price of iPhone 4 the salesman said 350 $ but only in the case in which I would have bought it in that moment.
When I was leaving the shop, the salesman followed me saying that the price for ipod touch (last generation) would have been 180 $.
A similar thing happened in another shop...at first they said a price and then when I was leaving they following me telling a lower price.
What I have to do? the price is good, so I would like to know if I can trust in these shops... obviously before buying anything I would try it.
I don't trust those shops. They sell a lot of damaged/retuned goods to tourists who won't be around to complain. There's a reason why they're in Times Square.
You can order the same directly from Apple for $149 per their website, with an intact warranty on a refurbished model of the last generation iPod. I would not purchase it from anyone else but Apple. You have to order it online from Apple, however, as they don't usually stock the previous models in the store, except as replacements for customers who have broken their iPod. For $179, you can get the 32GB 3G iTouch, again directly shipped from Apple.
If you want a current generation model, go to J&R on Park Row in Lower Manhattan; B&H Photo Video on 34th at 9th Avenue; or any of a number of Best Buy stores. B&H has the current, 4th Generation, 8GB model for $209. If you don't want it because of the camera, the best bet is to order the 3G from Apple, or have the camera disabled. I know people in secure work environments who have had to have the camera disabled in their iPhones.
Any shop that plays the pricing game is doing just that, playing until they haggle you into a price that's still too expensive. Some shops sell used items as new, others have been known to play scams where you essentially buy an empty box, etc. There are a million tricks, but some of the abuses have been curbed, though not the overcharging. I would not buy anything like that where the price is not clearly stated, which it is at authorized retail outlets.

Slightly off the original topic, but I wanted to chime in and agree with the posters above - I am a total Apple geek, and everything I have ever bought from them, has been ordered refurb'ed directly through their website.
I got a few ipods from the apple website, all refurbished (much cheaper than retail) and they all worked great
