They make a profit the same way Applebees and other lousy chains do...poor quality food, high prices, heavy marketing from corporate, and volume. I actually like papa john's pizza, but don't eat it in NYC because the quality is substantially worse than outside the metropolitan area. Same applies for most chains...they are considerably worse here than outside the area.

This is one of the great mysteries of NYC and has been debated many a time here on the boards.

I grew up in the suburbs and still don't get it. Those places are disgusting.

Because is just a myth that every neighborhoods in NYC
got great pizza. The fact is many of the pizzeria just not
that good, especially the ones not owned by Italians. This
is not prejudice against other ethnicities with pizzeria, it's
just my personal experience eating pizza around the city.
And Papa Johns/Dominos is not that bad compare to the
average pizzeria in the city.

Maybe all those same tourists who flock to McDonald's because they prefer something familiar?

Why do you eat McDonalds? Because no matter where you get it, it always tastes the same. Frankly it is nice to have consistency sometimes and I don't think that they are the worst Pizza chains...now if you mentioned CC's, I am just as shocked that they stay in business. Macaroni Pizza? Seriously? At least Domino's and Papa Johns tries to be authentic. I am sure that pricing has to figure into that equation too as to why someone would bypass the restaurants.
