I am a man, and regardless of whether the person is the owner, you are tipping for the SERVICE remember? If service is lousy, or its a bad cut, you do not tip. If service is good you tip. If the owner cuts your hair or not, does not matter...tip for service. The end.
Funny you should ask. Technically you're not supposed to tip the owner. But years ago I was going to the Minardi salon and one time had an appointment with the owner, Beth Minardi. It was additionally awkward because she did almost NONE of the work - it was mostly done by a flunky assistant. My solution was to make a show of offering her a tip, saying, "I know that owners don't usually except tips, but..." - and I figured she would decline and tell me to give it to the assistant. But she took it! Augh. So awkward.
You NEVER tip the owner of the salon even if they are your stylist.. That is what my Stylist said to me.
"I keep the full amount of the price of the haircut" But tip the other stylists they rent a chair, space or take a percentage of the tab for their services...
I never tip the owner. But once when I was away for an extended business trip, I bought the owner a small gift as a token of appreciation when I came to get my hair done (immediately after I returned).
I tip the owner if she styles my hair. I feel like not tipping is a slight, even though I know she pockets what I pay for my hair.
