Prices are good (quite a bit cheaper than Forest Hills,) neighborhood is fine, BMT gives quickISH access to Manhattan and for family visits, it's an easy walk or a single subway stop from Forest Hills and the LIRR.
I second Bayside, Whitestone and Kew Garden Hills. Also, look at Briarwood (where it borders Kew Gardens, away from Jamaica). If you are open to the LIRR, you should try anything near the Port Washington line.
In terms of affordability, also check out College Point.
The problem with Woodside, Forest Hills/Rego Park and anything near Flushing, Northern Blvd area (North Flushing) is PARKING. Parking is a total nightmare and some streets in FH have alternate side street parking rules so you would have to wake up at 5 am to move your car...Not. Worth. It.
I live in Briarwood. It's a great area. It takes me ~30 minutes to get to work in the morning from the Briarwood-Van Wyck E/F station. You are close to Forest Hills, and transportation is very convenient. There is also a bus that stops at Main Street/Queens Blvd that will take you to the Bronx Zoo!

Thanks, I am really looking into Bayside and Bayside Terrace areas, as well as the areas off Bell Blvd.
Whitestone is REALLY nice but unfortunately it is not near any public transportation (it has no subway line and no LIRR line either)
Forest Hills it out because of the higher rent prices and the alternate side of the street parking rules.....actually I heard the parking in general is a nightmare....lol....
I have a car so I want something with a parking space or a driveway or some type of garage...
It's of course based on availability. We talked to our landlord a couple of months ago (we don't have a car, but we consider every now and then whether we want to get one) and he quoted us around $150 or so a month for an available spot in our garage. It varies by building.
