Hi- My co worker and I have 1 free day in NYC. Free time is in the daytime. We are both from he area and have already seen most, if not all, of the typical NYC vacation/tourist spots. Were not looking to do a show or anything like that. Any hidden gems, tours, walks, etc? Bring on the recommendations!

I'm a fan of the NYC Transit museum, it was a very interesting slice of NYC history. There are also some ethnic food tours that are cool. They are walking tours and have tastings at each stopping point. I did one in the East Village a couple of months back: New York Food Tours. There are also some brewery tours that you can do (Williamsburg). Also, the timing might not be right for your visit but there are brownstone tours (in BK) where you can actually go inside of residential homes and see the architecture. The homes are restored ,or in the process of being restored, and have retained most of the original detail from the 1800s. The one I know of only happens once a year (10/20/12 this year) so that's why I'm saying the timing might not work out.
I can suggest either the Museum of the City of NY or the NY Historical Society Museum (which during the summer had a special exhibit about the history of beer & breweries in NY but I don't know if that exhibit is still running or not).

History in general Architecture - Go to the highline. It's touristy, but it's main focus is all the different types of architecture. You can also cross of the beer part while you're there as there are lots of places at the highline that serve. Transportation - What do you mean by transportation? like do you just want to take the subway? because that's how you'll get just about anywhere so you'll be doing that no matter what.
