What's the area around 125th & Lenox like? Not planning on wandering around, just heading to the Red Rooster & Lenox Lounge. I'd assume it's not so bad as to deter one from taking a taxi to the restaurant, but some friends seemed concerned...

Also, if anyone's been to the Red Rooster, is it casual or do most dress up?

"Safety" is often a very subjective thing. If you don't feel safe there, don't go! But nobody should be able to tell you if a particular neighborhood is safe or not--you have to make that decision yourself.

You'll be fine if you are just going to the restaurant and leaving. 125 is a very busy street. What exactly are your friends scared of?

One of our best friends with his wife and baby live there (just moved from 125 and Lenox to 118 and Lenox). It's a busy street on 125th so there are always a lot of people around. When I leave their apartment very late by myself I have felt slightly uncomfortable, but when I am with my husband I have always felt fine.

You should be fine. I walked to the Red Rooster from a friend's house, so you should be fine taking a cab there. The food is very gourmet. It's pricey and well worth it, not by serving size but by taste. Enjoy!

I agree with the rest. I have walked down 125th Street and also Lenox Avenue in the past. No problems and I am white as rice. Harlem is changing and I would consider the majority "safe" especially below 125th. I know that there are still a few projects to avoid...I believe they are by the East River around 140th, something like that. However, major commercial avenues and streets, especially near the subway stops are fine.

Update: okay, the area around the restaurant was fine, the restaurant was EXCELLENT! Sorry to have asked what was possibly a stupid question... but some people are just paranoid about some neighborhoods and it made me second guess heading up there. Glad I did, had one of the best meals ever!
