What age for schools ? Lots of NYC neighborhoods have good elementary and even some middle schools.High schools can be a problem unless your kids get into the specialized(test) high schools.

You should probably concentrate your search in Queens around Bayside and Whitestone and in the Southeast Bronx around Throg's Neck,Country Club and Pelham Gardens. These are neighborhoods on either side of the bridges(Whitestone,Throg's Neck) between Queens and The Bronx and have easy access to parkways and expressways to Yonkers and the airports.

Both areas have good elementary schools. The schools in Queens might be a little better but the house prices and rents are double.

You have to decide who gets to commute over a bridge and pay 11.00/day in tolls.Someone will have to.

You could also look in Westchester( Pelham ? New Rochelle ?) but then your husband would be getting a considerably longer commute. If you live in NYC you will both pay NYC income tax.

i'm hoping not to drive - i'd rather spend an hour on train(s) than stuck in traffic ;-) we both lived in the city before, but before kids, so it was easier to figure things out. thanks for your advice!

If you're planning to commute by transit, the obvious choice would be Harlem: You could take Metro-North to Yonkers, while you husband could take the M60 bus to LaGuardia Airport.

Unfortunately, it doesn't really fit any of the other criteria. Maybe you could try Astoria, just over the RFK Bridge (you would have to take the M60 bus to Harlem for the Metro-North).

Do both of you plan to use transit or just one of you? That might help you narrow down the search. Woodlawn might work if your husband isn't traveling to LaGuardia daily (you could take the BL-20/21 bus into Yonkers)
