You can take a bus from the ferry terminal and visit Historical Richmond Town (a living 17th century history village & museum). See Historic Richmond Town - HOME

I just came to this thread to recommend this as well. You'd need to start early though and plan on spending most of the day on SI.

Richmond Town is fabulous, especially if you love history. Take a guided tour. There is sooooo much history on Staten Island that n one knows about.

I realize that it's free, but sometimes I wonder how sage the advice is when people recommend taking the ferry to tourists. If you really have an hour to spare, and it's a nice day, it's a different way to see the city, but unless you live there, there's really not much to entice you to actually get off on the Staten Island side. There are better ways to spend an hour, IMO.
I definitely recommend the Ferry to tourists. I did it myself when I was there last year and it was one of the highlights of my vacation. (One of many). I LOVED it!

To get to Richmondtown, take the S74 from the Taxi Stand of the St. George Ferry Terminal (it used to stop at Ramp B, but it is closed for renovations, so all Ramp B buses go to the Taxi Stand).

The trip to Richmondtown is about 35 minutes, give or take.

I'm thinking maybe the Children's Museum, but I've only been to Staten Island once and all we did was ride the ferry and go right back, so the bus scares me a little, lol! Btw, my daughter just turned 6 if that helps.
