I've always lived in places with centralized aircon, and this will be my first experience with a window aircon. Is it really that easy to install as this video shows? How to Install Window Air Conditioners

Does one really just push it in place, retain with the window sill, and hold in place with the accordion?

That's a relatively small unit, 3 to 6,000 BTUs. For that size the video is accurate. Not much weight. I have one window that is so narrow you have grip the AC by the top flange and bring the window down on it carefully, no way to hold on from the outside. That kind of surprise can be common in NYC. If you're talking bigger 10K and above try to get one that has a seperate sleeve you install first and slide the unit in. Much easier. Come to think of it, get someone to help who has done so before.

I've just learned that my landlord requires that an aircon installation company with insurance do the task. Is that usual?

Likely he has been informed by his insurance company to do so. I guess not so unusual these days. It depends on the LL.

Go to Home Depot and get an air-conditioner support for 40 bucks. They are pit in the window so when you get it in the window and make it stick outside it will not fall out.

it looks like a while metal thing, you will see them on other apartments.

In NYC if you are going to live in an apt.. the airconditioner has to be held in place by window brackets. If you live in a large bldg. with a super, he can install it for you for a small payment.

My building required this as well. It's all about liability lawsuits these days. Your landlord does not want to be sued when your a/c falls on a passerby.
You could try making an appt with a place like Weston Bros in Queens. I can't remember if I used them or a different company so this is not a recommendation. You might also look at Yelp for a recommendation.

These companies charge an arm and a leg, though, like $175. Crazy.
Good luck.

And what would they do if I go ahead and install it myself? It would be a fait accompli by the time they find out, right?

If you install it yourself improperly and it falls out of the window, you will be fined by the city. (This happened to a neighbor of mine.)
