If you live in NJ, you'll have to work out some combination of driving/bus/train, which I've done before and didn't mind, but it's not convenient.
That is good information. My coworkers who live in Elizabeth, NJ have to drive to the train station and than take the train to Manhattan. It is harder to live close to a train station in New Jersey. One of my coworkers lives in Cliffside Park, NJ and just has to walk to a bus stop, which is more convenient. There are definetly different options in New Jersey. For faster commute look for areas close to a bus route like in Cliffside Park.

I live in Brooklyn and take the Subway everywhere and don't find it to be a problem at all. The only difficulty is riding on the East SIde of Manhattan. The 4,5,6 train are always completely packed. All other trains I take, F,1,2,3,Q,B,D all are okay. If one is extremely packed I just wait for the second one which usually has space.
While there are some great towns with a reasonably easy commute from NJ (think Westfield, Maplewood), it's still an extra half hour to then get to Rockefeller Plaza. Hoboken is much closer but I don't know it well enough to say whether it has good schools, or is family-friendly.
What do the NY-writers think of Astoria, Queens? Very close...
Oh the joy of shopping in the city. Paying to park in a lot whether it's a "run" to the pharmacy or the pediatrician, an easy trip into Costco or Shoprite - taking the elevator up to the meat dept, back down to the paper goods, oops, forgot milk, elevator back up to 2nd floor - all with 3 kids in tow - and then out to the car which is where? A block and a half away - so pay for delivery - and don't forget shopping for kids' school clothes, what a joy, the mall charges for parking unless you drive a half hour - oh wait, traffic, so you sit for a half hour, drive a half hour and go to the mall where you don't have to park - kids are cranky by the time you get there! Sorry, you could not pay me enough to live in the city - and I know the pay is supposed to cover some of the inconvenience but just spending a day trying to get from a dress store to Junior's in Brooklyn (for a birthday lunch with friends) is enough to remind me why I would never live in the city.
