just moved in around 105th and columbus. from 2-3 days ago, me and my husband hear this sound, which really sounds like gunshot sound. do you have any information regarding this? we thought about the fireworks, but we actually went to see the fireworks today. it was not the same sound. the sound was more rapid, close together and sharp. Are we being stupid and worrying about nothing?

If you heard it recently, it's probably people setting off some fireworks. Happens ALL the time around late June till mid July. Just wait another month and the noises you're hearing should go away.
Also, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between the two...

wouldn't be surprised if it was or if it wasn't. People generally use this time to fire their weapons seeing as how the sounds between the two are very similar... As someone already mentioned though, even if they were shots, chances are unless you live in high crime neighborhood this was the exception and not the norm...

just realized where you moved into... yea... those might be gunshots... here is a link that shows the violent crime rate in comparison with NYC and then NY

Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed scroll over to crime rates

Just in case you can't see the link... violent crime rate in NY 4.52... NYC 7.75... your area... a little over 55

Exactly. I work around that area. Cops are around there all the time patrolling the area. Just be mindful of your surroundings when you walk around like all smart NYers do.

It's just firecrackers..which for the record are NOT the same as the traditional fireworks you see at the Macys show. Unless they're bussin off submachine guns around your way you can usually tell the difference. The hissing/whistling sound before the firecracker sets off is a dead giveaway.
